Mad as a Hatter: The Hidden Roots of the Tea Party Movement (Part 1)

When it comes to bad Nazi comparisons, few have been more boisterous and outright buffoonish than the vituperations of Tea Party mouthpiece and Fox News host Glenn Beck. One of his recent Nazi comparisons involved taking a closer look at the concept of empathy in politics and – get this – how Hitler used 'empathy' to euthanize baby Knauer, a child born with significant birth defects in 1938 Germany, amid the debate over Hitler's eugenics policies. Beck's conclusion: "Empathy leads you to bad decisions every time." While Glenn Beck's logic is certainly twisted, I think we can safely say that he takes Godwin's Law to new heights. In his first 18 months on Fox News, from early 2009 through the middle of this year, Glenn Beck and his guests invoked Hitler 147 times; Nazis, an additional 202 times; Fascism or fascists, 193 times; the Holocaust got 76 mentions; and Joseph Goebbels got 24 mentions. It has been the unwritten rule in American politics not to invoke a comparison of Hitler and the Nazis because at that point all rational thought seemingly stops (probably a big reason Beck does this). Glenn Beck has certainly let the cat out of the bag with his Nazi fetish; and given the paranoid, vitriolic rhetoric, one wonders if there isn't a bit of psychological projection going on too...

I don’t know if it is only me noticing these things, but it seems all the good heroes are dead; and we notice that they all had three things in common: an ability to move the masses by their simple presence, a feeling of unity with all people regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or social status; and the most important of all, the thing that meant they had to die – they were totally opposed to war. Is it too ‘conspiracy minded’ to point this out? To wonder how the human race has had such inexplicable bad luck to have lost all its decent, anti-war heroes?
Well, anyway, we are left now to our own devices; or rather, at the mercy of the ravening, bloodthirsty wolves that took away from all of us the best hope we ever had – John Fitzgerald Kennedy, tearing him to bloody pieces right before our eyes.
And what did America do? Nothing. And on the day that the American people allowed their president to die on the street, a victim of the filthiest examples of deviance ever to take human form, and not rise up en masse to demand that the killers be brought to justice, that is the day America died. “The soft, the complacent, the self-satisfied societies will be swept away with the debris of history.” – John Fitzgerald Kennedy...
